Our own taxonomy: 8 levels, 244 themes and supply chains
Sectors are too coarse to answer most of the questions we get. "Who else makes the cooling for AI data centres?" or "Which suppliers does a downturn in phone sales hit first?" need a finer map of what companies actually do, and how they are connected. So we built our own.
Our own tree
EquationDB classifies companies into its own taxonomy, up to 8 levels deep: 17 sectors at the top and 5,947 nodes in all — NVIDIA sits under Data-Center GPUs › Training Accelerators, ASML under EUV Lithography, Visa under Global Card Networks › Open-Loop. Across it run 244 themes in their own hierarchy — AI › AI Infrastructure › Compute / Networking / Power / Cooling, Health › Obesity › GLP-1, Energy › Nuclear › SMRs and more. Taxonomy says what a company is (one primary path); themes say what it is exposed to (many, each with a strength). 69,778 companies are classified. Each classification is a set of typed answers from AI reading the company's own description — what it sells, to whom, how much of the business it is — rather than a single label, so a company sits on one path in the tree and belongs to several themes, each with the model's confidence kept as evidence.
Every node is a universe
Every sector, industry, sub-industry and theme is a universe you can query like any other:
GET TH.AI.INFRA SELECT symbol, name, node_name, mcap SORT mcap DESC LIMIT 25
Themes are global — GET TH.HEALTH.OBESITY.GLP1 lists members on every exchange, us.theme.glp1 only US listings — and a parent theme includes everything under it.
Screens, events, outcomes and backtests all work on it, and every node and theme has its own index series ($TH.…, $EQ.…, global ones in USD), so you can chart a theme against the market, measure its breadth, or run OUTCOMES on its moves.
Supply chains
For the top 3,000 US companies we extract suppliers and customers from company descriptions and earnings-call transcripts — who said what, and when:
GRAPH SUPPLY CHAIN OF AAPL DEPTH 1
Combine it with prices to see how a shock travels: rank a company's suppliers by their one-month move, or test what usually happens to customers after a supplier misses.
